RESEARCH, MONITORING & DVLP
The Research, Monitoring and Development (RMD)Wing is comprised of four functional Circles viz. the Research, the Monitoring, the Training( Development) and the Soil Conservation.
The Research Circle with its three Divisions situated in Darjeeling, Siliguri and Medinipur respectively, is concerned with forestry research such as tree improvement, tree introduction, production of quality planting materials like seeds, clones etc, updating of protocols on nurseries and plantations, growing stock assessment and silvicultural operations in the plantations. It maintains the famous Lloyds Botanic Garden (Darjeeling) and a host of Biodiversity parks and Medicinal Plants Conservation Areas in the State.
The Monitoring Circle with its two Divisions at Siliguri and Kolkata, monitors the plantation performance raised under various schemes in the State at 1st year, 3rdyr. and 5th yr. respectively and comes up with a State Report with details such as survival percentage, height etc with averages at State, Circle and Divisional levels. Parameters are recorded from sample plots ( @ 7.5% in the first year and 5% in third and fifth years, from each plantations. abo 90% in the first year above 70% in the third year and above 50% in the fifth year are considered excellent.

The Soil Conservation Wing with two Divisions in North Bengal viz., Kurseong and Jalpaiguri respectively, undertakes soil conservation measures such as gully plugging, boulder sausage works, hand packed wall, river training works etc. besides the plantation activities in land slide/slip prone areas and other refractory sites.
The Development Circle is concerned with the Induction training of front line staff at the level of Foresters and below. Besides, in service trainings are also being provided to Forest Rangers, Foresters and Forest Guards through the Forest Training Centre, Hijli (Kharagpur), the Forester’s school at Dowhill (Kurseong) and Training centre, Alipur duar respectivrly.
